# How to make money with video: eleven business models compared with numbers

> Eleven business models earn money from video in 2026, paid in three ways: by clients, by platforms, or by your own buyers and sponsors. Five need no audience, and the platform programmes open between 500 and 50,000 followers [25][26]. Goldman Sachs Research estimated in 2023 that the creator economy could reach $480 billion by 2027, and that only about 4% of creators earn more than $100,000 a year [1].

## At a glance

- **Models compared:** 11, in three groups
- **Cost to start:** $0 to $12 a month
- **Need no audience:** 5 service models
- **Lowest platform threshold:** 500 followers

## Key takeaways

- Five of the eleven models need no audience: clients pay for clipping, UGC, agency work, real estate video and localization.
- Published prices in October 2026: about $10 to $31 a clip, $154 paid for an average UGC job (Collabstr, 2025) and $150 to $570 for a listing walkthrough [4][5][7][12][13].
- Platform payouts start at thresholds: 500 followers for Instagram Gifts, 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours for YouTube ads (8,000 hours for channels applying from 1 February 2027) and 10,000 followers for TikTok rewards [25][18][19][24].
- Udemy pays 37% of a sale it brings and 97% of a sale you bring, and a 60-second host-read podcast ad is listed at $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads [28][36].
- Most example months in the series fit the 300 AI minutes of the $6 Starter plan; a weekly 45-minute podcast (about 364 minutes) needs Pro at $12.

## The eleven video business models, compared

Every model here sells the same raw material, edited video, to a different payer. The payer decides how soon money can arrive and what you need before it does.

- **Services paid by clients.** Clipping, UGC product videos, a local-business agency, real estate video and localization, paid per clip, video, month or video minute.
- **Platform payouts.** YouTube long videos, faceless channels and the short-video programmes: a share of advertising once you pass a threshold.
- **Your own products and deals.** Courses, affiliate links and podcast sponsorship: buyers, merchants or sponsors pay you.

- **$480 billion** — what the creator economy could reach by 2027, from $250 billion in 2023 (Goldman Sachs Research) [1]
- **$100 billion** — paid by YouTube to creators, artists and media companies in four years, stated in January 2026 [2]
- **91%** — of businesses use video as a marketing tool (Wyzowl, 266 respondents, late 2025) [3]
- **4%** — of creators earn more than $100,000 a year, in the same Goldman Sachs estimate [1]

Goldman Sachs Research counted about 50 million creators in 2023 and reported that brand deals were about 70% of creator revenue [1]. Money from companies is the larger pool, which is why five of the eleven models are service businesses.

| [Faceless channel](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-faceless-youtube-channel) | YouTube: a share of ads | $6 to $12 a month | Same threshold; none expected in 30 days | 1,000 subscribers |
| [Short-video programmes](https://cutluma.com/guides/short-video-monetization-tiktok-reels-shorts) | TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat; viewers’ gifts | $0 to $6 a month | After each programme’s threshold | 500 to 50,000 followers |

> “First money” is the earliest point in each part’s own 30-day plan or in the programme’s rules, not a forecast. Every figure in this series is a published range or a labelled example, not a promise of income.

## Do you need followers? The audience threshold of each model

**Followers or subscribers needed before a model can pay**

| | Followers |
| --- | --- |
| Clipping | 0 |
| UGC | 0 |
| Local agency | 0 |
| Real estate | 0 |
| Localization | 0 |
| Affiliate (Amazon) | 500 |
| Instagram Gifts | 500 |
| YouTube fan funding | 500 |
| YouTube ads | 1,000 |
| TikTok Rewards | 10,000 |

Snapchat is off this scale at 50,000 followers, by invitation [26]. Most programmes add a views or watch-time test. *Sources: each platform’s help or policy page, October 2026 [18][20][24][25][33]*

The five service models start at zero because the client supplies the audience. Elsewhere, followers are half of each test. YouTube ads need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days [18]; TikTok needs 10,000 followers plus 100,000 views in 30 days [24]. Courses and podcast ads you sell yourself have no published threshold, but both need people to sell to.

> **Watch out:** YouTube’s bar rises for channels that apply from 1 February 2027: 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. The 500-subscriber tier (3,000 hours or 3 million Shorts views) is unchanged, and channels already in the programme keep their status [19].

## Services paid by clients: clipping, UGC, local agency, real estate, localization

These five are the shortest road to a first payment. You sell finished files, so the income can be calculated before you start. Prices were read on public pages in October 2026, in US dollars.

| Model | The published numbers | Main risk |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Clipping](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-clipping-business) | About $10 to $31 a clip in published plans: $397 a month for 40 podcast clips, $495 for 16 short videos [4][5]. Campaign clippers average $1 per 1,000 views (Whop, March 2025) [6] | A channel of other people’s clips is reused content on YouTube, even with permission [21] |
| [UGC creator](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-become-a-ugc-creator) | Average package listed at $180 and paid at $154 on Collabstr in 2025; UGC rose from 15% to 35% of campaigns [7] | Usage rights given away at the base fee; describing a product you have not tried [41] |
| [Local video agency](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-social-media-video-agency) | 66% of small businesses use unpaid social media, 26% video marketing (LocaliQ, 2026 report) [8]. Twelve short videos a month: $269 for editing alone, $1,350 with account management [9][10] | Scope creep, and reliance on one client |
| [Real estate video](https://cutluma.com/guides/real-estate-video-business) | 51% of US buyers found their home on the internet; 12% of sellers said their agent used video (NAR, 2025 report) [11]. Walkthrough $150 to $570, vertical cut $80 to $190 [12][13][14] | Drone licences, privacy, listing-service branding rules |
| [Localization](https://cutluma.com/guides/multilingual-video-business) | Over 25% of watch time from other languages, on average, with multi-language audio (YouTube, July 2025) [15]. Human subtitle translation: $6.49 to $15.99 a video minute [16] | Mistranslation: each language needs a native reviewer |

All five work the same way: a sample before the pitch, a fixed package, delivery by share link. Pick the one whose customer you can already reach.

## Platform payouts: YouTube long videos, faceless channels and short-video programmes

Here nobody hires you: a platform shares its advertising once you qualify, so the first months earn nothing. YouTube’s earnings page says there are no guarantees about how much, or whether, a partner is paid [17].

| Model | The published numbers | Main risk |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [YouTube long videos](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-much-does-youtube-pay) | The creator keeps 55% of ad revenue on long videos, 45% of the Shorts allocation and 70% of memberships and Supers [17] | The entry threshold doubles for channels applying from 1 February 2027 [19] |
| [Faceless channel](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-faceless-youtube-channel) | Median RPM about $2.30 across 300 channels, May 2025 to May 2026; Education & Science led at $10.22 (AIR Media-Tech) [22] | The “inauthentic content” policy excludes mass-produced, templated videos [21] |
| [Short-video programmes](https://cutluma.com/guides/short-video-monetization-tiktok-reels-shorts) | TikTok: 10,000 followers, 100,000 views in 30 days, original videos over 1 minute, eight countries [24]. Facebook’s programme is invite-only [27] | Country lists, originality rules, no fixed rate per view |

Read the three together: short videos find strangers and long videos earn. In YouTube’s own illustration, a Short with 1 million engaged views earns its creator $405 [23], and watch time in the Shorts feed does not count towards the 4,000 hours [18].

## Your own products and deals: courses, affiliate links and podcast sponsors

In the third group you set the offer, and a buyer, a merchant or a sponsor pays. No platform threshold stands in the way, but you bring every customer.

| Model | The published numbers | Main risk |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Online course](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-create-and-sell-an-online-course) | Udemy pays 37% of a marketplace sale and 97% with your coupon or link (Instructor Terms, July 2026) [28]; Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 of a direct sale [30]. Median watch time was at most 6 minutes in 6.9 million edX sessions [29] | Recording 20 lessons before anyone has paid: sell a pilot first |
| [Affiliate videos](https://cutluma.com/guides/video-affiliate-marketing) | Amazon pays 0% to 10% by category, within 24 hours of the click [31][32]. HubSpot: 30% recurring for up to a year; Semrush: $100 to $300 a sale [34][35]. US affiliate spending: $13.62 billion in 2024 [40] | No disclosure in the video itself [41]; programmes can cut rates |
| [Video podcast](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-monetize-a-video-podcast) | 58% of Americans aged 12 and over consumed a podcast in the last month (Edison Research, January 2026) [39]. A 60-second host-read ad: $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads [36] | Marketplaces ask for 20,000 downloads an episode [37], so a small show sells its own ads |

Spotify’s Partner Program sits between the groups: it asks for 3 episodes, 2,000 consumption hours and an audience of 1,000 on Spotify in the last 30 days [38].

## How to choose a video business model in ten minutes

Find the row that describes what you already have. If two rows fit, take the one whose customer you can reach this month: the service plans reach a first paid job in their fourth week, and platforms pay only after a threshold.

| If you have | Start with | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2 to 3 hours a week, no audience | One [clipping](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-clipping-business) or [agency](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-social-media-video-agency) client | About 2.5 hours an episode, or 7.5 hours a month for 12 videos, in the examples |
| A phone and products you use | [UGC](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-become-a-ugc-creator) | Brands pay for the file, not your reach: $154 on average (Collabstr, 2025) [7] |
| No wish to be on camera | [Clipping](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-clipping-business), [localization](https://cutluma.com/guides/multilingual-video-business) or a [faceless channel](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-faceless-youtube-channel) | You edit other people’s footage, or publish a script with a voice and stock |
| One skill people ask you about | A [course](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-create-and-sell-an-online-course), sold first as a paid pilot | Udemy pays 97% of a sale you bring, 37% of one it brings [28] |
| A second language | [Localization](https://cutluma.com/guides/multilingual-video-business), with a native reviewer | Human subtitle translation is listed at $6.49 to $15.99 a video minute [16] |
| Local contacts: shops, clinics, estate agents | An [agency](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-social-media-video-agency) or [real estate video](https://cutluma.com/guides/real-estate-video-business) | 26% of small businesses use video marketing; 12% of sellers saw their agent use video [8][11] |
| 4 hours a week and a guest list | A [video podcast](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-monetize-a-video-podcast) | Host-read ads list at $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads [36] |
| 500 followers or more | [Short-video programmes](https://cutluma.com/guides/short-video-monetization-tiktok-reels-shorts), [affiliate videos](https://cutluma.com/guides/video-affiliate-marketing), then [YouTube](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-much-does-youtube-pay) | Gifts, fan funding and Amazon’s affiliate review start near 500 [25][20][33] |

Choose one. The models combine later (a podcast feeds clips, a channel feeds a course), but each 30-day plan assumes your full attention.

## The production workflow all eleven models share in CutLuma

Whatever you sell, the work is one line: record or import, cut, caption, reshape, brand, deliver. CutLuma runs in desktop Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox. Steps marked free work on the Free plan; the rest use AI time.

1. **Record or import** — In the **Record** tab choose **Studio recording** for screen and camera, or **Camera** with **Teleprompter** ticked. Drop other footage into the **Media** tab. The [screen recorder](https://cutluma.com/tools/screen-recorder), [webcam recorder](https://cutluma.com/tools/webcam-recorder) and [teleprompter](https://cutluma.com/tools/online-teleprompter) are free.
2. **Cut with the transcript, or remove silence** — Press **T**, click **Transcribe**, then run **Fillers**, **Pauses** and **Retakes**; a sentence deleted in the text is cut from every track ([edit video as text](https://cutluma.com/tools/edit-video-as-text), about one AI minute per minute of speech). With no AI time, select the clip and press **Cut silences** ([remove silence](https://cutluma.com/tools/remove-silence-from-video), free).
3. **Add captions** — In the **Text** tab open **Auto captions**, choose the language and a style, then click any caption to correct names and numbers. [Auto captions](https://cutluma.com/tools/add-captions-to-video) use AI time at the same rate.
4. **Make clips, or resize** — For a long recording, open [Magic Clips](https://cutluma.com/tools/video-to-shorts), set **How many clips?** and **Clip length** and click **Find the best clips**: each scored clip can be opened as a captioned 9:16 project. For other shapes, press **Ctrl+K** and choose **Copy into other sizes** ([resize video](https://cutluma.com/tools/resize-video), free).
5. **Apply a template and the brand kit** — Start from a design in the **Templates** tab ([template gallery](https://cutluma.com/templates)). In the **Style** tab open **Brand kit**, add logo, colours and font, click **Save brand kit**, then **Brand all text**, **Add my logo** and **Add a closing card**. Both are free.
6. **Export, share, write the post text** — Click **Export** and download the MP4: 1080p, or 4K on Pro. Click **Get share link** and keep **Allow comments & reactions** on for approval. The share icon next to **Export** opens the [publish kit](https://cutluma.com/tools/youtube-description-chapters-generator): titles, a description with chapters and hashtags for about one AI minute.

*The editor with a template open. Each line of text is its own clip on the timeline, and the **Format** buttons on the right switch the same design between 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 and 21:9.*

***Studio recording**. The left column sets what is recorded; the right column lists the edits applied for you afterwards. **Made for** sets the shape of the recording before you choose a screen or window.*

![The Magic Clips options: the part of the video to use, how many clips, clip length, spoken language, edit style (Viral, Podcast, Clean), caption style, format, layout, pace, look and the list of edits](https://cutluma.com/img/playbooks/en/magic-clips-options.webp)

*The **Magic Clips** options before the run. Only the part you select is listened to, so that is the part you pay AI time for. The edit style, caption style, format (9:16, 4:5, 1:1) and layout (Fill, Split screen, Fit + blur) are set here.*

![The Export dialog: MP4 or animated GIF, resolution from 480p to 4K, 24, 30 or 60 fps, standard or high quality, and the estimated file size](https://cutluma.com/img/playbooks/en/export.webp)

*The **Export** dialog. Resolution, frame rate and quality follow your plan (free exports are 1080p with a small watermark); the link under the summary sends the timeline to Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve, or downloads the captions as SRT or VTT.*

CutLuma does not post or schedule, has no analytics for social accounts and does not invoice: you upload the MP4 and bill with your own tools. Each part adds its own steps, such as [Translate video](https://cutluma.com/tools/translate-video) for localization and the [real estate kit](https://cutluma.com/tools/real-estate-video-maker) for listings.

## What one CutLuma plan pays for

Software is the smallest cost in every model. The table joins the [pricing](https://cutluma.com/pricing) page to the parts’ worked examples; a year costs ten months.

| Plan | Price a month | AI time a month | What it covers |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | None | Samples: full editor, recorder, templates, stock library, brand kit; 3 projects, 1 GB, 1080p with a small watermark |
| Starter | $6 | 300 minutes | No watermark, unlimited projects, 15 GB, 1080p at 60 fps. One weekly clipping client (204 minutes) or a 20-lesson course (260) |
| Pro | $12 | 1,200 minutes | 4K, 100 GB, files up to 5 GB. A weekly 45-minute podcast (about 364 minutes) or five weekly clipping clients |
| Business | $29 | 6,000 minutes | 250 GB, files up to 10 GB, priority support: volume dubbing and listing work |

**AI minutes a month in each part’s example**

| | AI minutes |
| --- | --- |
| Faceless, 4 own-voice videos | 68 min |
| YouTube, 4 videos | 160 min |
| Short video, 20 masters | 185 min |
| Clipping, 1 client | 204 min |
| Course, 20 lessons | 260 min |
| Affiliate, 12 reviews | 300 min |
| Podcast, 4 episodes | 364 min |

Starter includes 300 AI minutes and Pro 1,200; only the weekly podcast passes 300. Short video is the top of a 165 to 185 range. *Arithmetic in each part from CutLuma’s published AI-time rates*

> The AI voice is the one large item: [AI voiceover](https://cutluma.com/tools/ai-voice-generator) uses about 60 AI minutes per 1,000 characters for the natural English and Spanish voices, so a 2,000-character script uses about 120. With your own voice, recorded in the free [voiceover recorder](https://cutluma.com/tools/voice-recorder), an 8-minute faceless video uses about 17.

## What to do this week: a 7-day starter plan

| Day | What you do | Output |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Choose one model from the decision table and read its part. Open a free CutLuma account. | One model, with its first price or threshold |
| 2 | Fill in the brand kit, pick two templates and record a two-minute test. | A brand kit and a test recording |
| 3 | Take the test through all six workflow steps. | Sample 1 on a share link |
| 4 | Make two more samples in the format your model sells, each in two shapes. | 3 samples |
| 5 | Write the offer from the part’s published price range, or the channel promise and its threshold. | A one-page offer or channel plan |
| 6 | Services: list 20 prospects and send five messages with the part’s pitch wording. Channels and courses: list 12 topics. | 5 messages sent, or 12 topics |
| 7 | Note how long each sample took, and put the part’s 30-day plan in your calendar. | Your minutes per video and a start date |

The Free plan is enough for the week: three projects, with a small watermark. Move to Starter when you need AI time or clean files.

## Rules and risks that cut across every model

- **Originality and reused content.** YouTube does not monetize repurposed content without substantive changes, even with the original creator’s permission, and its “inauthentic content” rule covers repetitive or mass-produced videos [21]. Non-original Shorts are not counted for revenue [23], and Meta treats borders, captions or a speed change on someone else’s post as unoriginal [42].
- **Disclosure of paid content.** The US FTC says to disclose a financial relationship with a brand in the video, not just in the description, and not to assume a platform’s disclosure tool is enough [41]. That covers sponsors, affiliate links and UGC you post yourself.
- **Copyright and music.** The U.S. Copyright Office says no rule permits a set number of words or a percentage of a work, and recommends permission in cases of doubt [43]. Businesses cannot use TikTok’s general music library commercially [44], and a Short over one minute with claimed content is blocked [23].
- **Platform rule changes.** YouTube’s threshold changes on 1 February 2027 [19], and Facebook’s earlier reel and in-stream programmes ended on 31 August 2025 [27]. Do not build on one app.
- **Taxes.** Income from every model is taxable where you live. YouTube requires tax information from every monetizing creator and may deduct up to 24% of worldwide earnings without it [45].

> **Watch out:** This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Rules are as of October 2026: open the official page before you plan around a threshold or a rate.

## FAQ

**How much money can you make from videos?**

There is no single figure. Published unit prices include about $10 to $31 a clip [4][5], $154 paid on average for a UGC video (Collabstr, 2025) [7] and $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads for a host-read podcast ad [36]. Goldman Sachs Research estimated that about 4% of creators earn more than $100,000 a year [1].

**Can I make money with video without showing my face?**

Yes. Clipping, agency work, real estate edits and localization use other people’s footage, and a faceless channel uses a script, a voice and stock. YouTube’s policies do not require a face; they exclude mass-produced or reused content [21].

**Do I need followers to make money with video?**

Not for the five service models, where the client supplies the audience. Platform programmes start at 500 followers for Instagram Gifts, 1,000 subscribers for YouTube ads and 10,000 followers for TikTok rewards [25][18][24].

**What equipment do I need?**

A computer with desktop Chrome, Edge, Brave or Firefox, a phone that films 1080p, and a microphone close to your mouth for anything spoken. CutLuma is free for samples and $6 a month for files without a watermark.

**Which video business is the fastest to start?**

A service: the clipping, UGC, agency, real estate and localization plans each reach a first paid job in their fourth week. YouTube ad revenue waits for 1,000 subscribers, 4,000 watch hours and a review of about a month [18].

**Is it too late to start in 2026?**

The demand figures say no: UGC rose from 15% to 35% of Collabstr campaigns in 2025 [7], and only 26% of small businesses use video marketing [8]. Platform entry is getting harder: YouTube asks 8,000 watch hours from channels applying from 1 February 2027 [19].
