# Short video monetization: what TikTok, Reels, Shorts and Snapchat pay for, and how to qualify

> Five platforms pay for short vertical video, and each sets a different bar. TikTok asks for 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in 30 days and rewards only videos longer than one minute [1]; YouTube pays 45% of the ad revenue allocated to your Shorts from 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, rising to 20 million for channels that apply from 1 February 2027 [9][11][26]; Instagram starts at 500 followers with gifts [14]. The practical route is one master edit, over a minute long and free of logos, uploaded to every app.

## At a glance

- **Lowest entry bar:** 500 followers
- **Startup cost:** $0 to $6 a month
- **Income type:** Ad share, view rewards, gifts, subscriptions
- **Length that can earn everywhere:** Over 1 minute, up to 3
- **Skill level:** Beginner

## Key takeaways

- TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in 30 days, pays only on original videos over one minute, and is open in 8 countries [1].
- YouTube pays 45% of the revenue allocated to your Shorts after 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, in 138 countries and regions [9][11][12].
- From 1 February 2027 new YouTube applicants need 20 million Shorts views in 90 days, and every partner must hold 10 million to earn from the Shorts pool [26].
- Instagram’s help centre offers no open ad share for Reels: gifts start at 500 followers in 49 countries, and bonuses are by invitation [14][16].
- A 65 to 90 second 9:16 master with no borders, logos or other apps’ watermarks can earn on all five platforms.

## Which platforms pay for short video in 2026

Either the platform pays you from advertising, or viewers pay you directly with gifts, subscriptions and purchases. As of October 2026 the platform-paid programmes are TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program, YouTube’s Shorts revenue sharing, Facebook Content Monetization and Snapchat’s Monetization Program. Instagram’s help centre describes gifts, subscriptions and invite-only bonuses, with no open share of ad revenue [14][15][16].

- **10,000** — followers, plus 100,000 views in 30 days, to join TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program [1]
- **45%** — of the revenue allocated to your Shorts is what YouTube pays monetizing creators [11]
- **8** — countries where TikTok’s programme is open; YouTube’s covers 138 countries and regions [1][12]
- **$3 billion** — nearly: what Facebook says it paid creators in 2025, 35% more than in 2024 [20]

**Followers or subscribers needed before a programme opens**

| | Followers |
| --- | --- |
| Instagram Gifts | 500 |
| YouTube fan funding | 500 |
| YouTube Shorts ads | 1,000 |
| TikTok Shop (US) | 1,000 |
| TikTok Rewards | 10,000 |
| TikTok Subscription | 10,000 |

Snapchat is off this scale at 50,000 followers [23], and Facebook publishes no number because its programme is by invitation [19]. *Sources: each platform’s help or policy page, October 2026 [1][5][7][9][10][14]*

## Programmes paid by the platform: requirements and how they pay

| Programme | What you need | How it pays | Where |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| TikTok Creator Rewards Program [1][2] | 10,000 followers; 100,000 views in 30 days; age 18; a Personal Account | Per 1,000 qualified views on original videos over 1 minute; the rate moves with viewer region, watch time, retention and search value | US, UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico, Brazil |
| YouTube Shorts revenue sharing [9][11][12][26] | 1,000 subscribers; today 10 million Shorts views in 90 days (or 4,000 watch hours in 12 months); from 1 February 2027, 20 million (or 8,000 hours) | 45% of the revenue allocated to your Shorts from the monthly Creator Pool | 138 countries and regions |
| Facebook Content Monetization [19] | An invitation; the interest form “is not an application” | Qualified views and watch time on public reels, photos, stories and text posts; reels of 10 seconds or more | Not listed |
| Snapchat Monetization Program [23][24] | Invitation; 50,000 followers; 15,000 hours of view time in 28 days, 3,000 from Spotlight; Snap Star; age 18 | A share of ad revenue from Public Stories and Spotlight; Spotlight videos of 30 seconds or more | 43 countries for Stories ads, 39 for Spotlight |

TikTok’s “qualified view” needs five seconds of watch time, counts once per account, counts search views only after 30 seconds, and must come from one of the eight programme countries [1]. A video needs 1,000 For You feed views before it earns; Duets, Stitches, Photo Mode posts and sponsored videos never qualify [1].

Meta merged In-stream ads, Ads on Reels and the Performance bonus into Facebook’s programme in October 2024 [22], and all three ended on 31 August 2025 [19].

> **Watch out:** YouTube’s bar rises on 1 February 2027. Channels that apply from that date need 1,000 subscribers and 20 million Shorts views in 90 days, or 8,000 watch hours in 365 days; channels already in the programme keep their status. From the same date a channel must maintain 10 million Shorts views over 90 days to earn from the Shorts pool each month [26].

> YouTube’s 45% in YouTube’s own illustration: a country’s Shorts ads fill a Creator Pool of $90,000 after $10,000 goes to music licensing. Your Shorts have 1 million engaged views, 1% of the pool: $900. You keep 45% of that, $405 [11]. Example figures, not a rate.

> **Watch out:** No platform publishes a fixed price per 1,000 views. TikTok defines RPM as “average gross revenue per 1k qualified views” and says it moves with your viewers and your retention [2]; YouTube’s pool changes every month [11]. A per-view figure you see elsewhere is one creator’s report.

## Programmes paid by viewers: gifts, subscriptions and shop commissions

| Tool | What you need | What you receive |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram Gifts on Reels [14] | 500 followers; age 18; a professional account; one of 49 countries | $0.01 for every star received |
| Instagram Subscriptions [15] | No public number: it appears in your professional dashboard | The monthly fee you set; Instagram’s share is “currently at 0%”, Apple and Google take 30% |
| Instagram bonuses [16] | Invitation only, in test countries | Set by each bonus programme |
| YouTube fan funding and Shopping [10] | 500 subscribers; 3 public uploads and 3 million Shorts views in 90 days (or 3,000 watch hours) | Memberships, Super Thanks, Shopping; no ad share yet. Unchanged in 2027 [26] |
| TikTok Subscription [4][5] | Age 18; 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the past calendar month, or LIVE eligibility | 70% after app store fees, up to 90% with a bonus; $2.99 to $99.99 a month |
| TikTok LIVE Gifts [6] | Age 18 (19 in South Korea); allowed to go LIVE; an eligible location | Diamonds, awarded on the popularity of your LIVE |
| TikTok Shop affiliate, US policy [7] | 1,000 followers; age 18; based in the United States | Commission on sales; under 5,000 followers, at most 3 shoppable videos a day |

## Where each programme is open

**Countries and regions where each programme is available**

| | Countries |

| TikTok Rewards | 8 |
| Snapchat Spotlight | 39 |
| Snapchat Stories ads | 43 |
| Instagram Gifts | 49 |
| YouTube Partner Program | 138 |

- **TikTok Creator Rewards Program.** You must be based in one of the eight countries with an account registered there, and only views from those countries count [1].
- **YouTube.** The 138 areas include Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey [12].
- **Snapchat.** The Spotlight list includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, India, Indonesia and Nigeria [24].
- **Instagram Gifts.** The 49 countries include India, Indonesia, Turkey, Ghana and South Africa. No Arab country is on the list [14].

For a creator in Cairo, Riyadh or Lagos, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat are the platform-paid routes today; TikTok is for reach, not rewards.

## If you have X, start with Y

| If you have | Start with | Next target |
| --- | --- | --- |
| No audience yet | The same master on all five apps for 30 days | 500 followers on Instagram or YouTube |
| 500 Instagram followers in a listed country | Instagram Gifts [14] | Subscriptions, once the dashboard offers them |
| 500 subscribers and 3 million Shorts views in 90 days | YouTube fan funding [10] | 1,000 subscribers and 10 million views |
| 1,000 TikTok followers, based in the US | TikTok Shop affiliate [7] | 5,000 followers, to leave the pilot limits |
| 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days (20 million from 1 February 2027) | YouTube Shorts revenue sharing [9][26] | Holding 10 million views every 90 days |
| 10,000 TikTok followers in one of the 8 countries | Creator Rewards Program, then Subscription [1][4] | Higher retention and search value |
| 50,000 Snapchat followers | Spotlight videos of 30 seconds or more [23] | 15,000 hours of view time and Snap Star |

**YouTube: Shorts views needed in an average 30 days**

| | Views per 30 days |
| --- | --- |
| Fan funding | 1,000,000 |
| Shorts ads, today | 3,333,333 |
| Shorts ads, from Feb 2027 | 6,666,667 |

YouTube’s 90-day thresholds (3, 10 and 20 million) divided by three. TikTok’s test, 100,000 views in 30 days, is about 33 times lower than YouTube’s ad-share test today and 67 times lower from 1 February 2027. *Arithmetic from the thresholds on the TikTok and YouTube pages [1][9][10][26]*

## What you need and what it costs

A phone that films 1080p vertical video, a quiet room and an editor. CutLuma runs in desktop Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox. It does not post, schedule or report social analytics: you download the MP4 and upload it in each app.

- **Free, $0.** The full editor, templates and stock library, three projects, 1080p export with a small CutLuma badge. A badge is a logo, which Instagram shows less often [17].
- **Starter, $6 a month.** No badge, unlimited projects and 300 minutes of AI time. The workflow below assumes it. All plans are on the [pricing page](https://cutluma.com/pricing).

> Example: 20 masters a month with 75 seconds of speech each need about 25 AI minutes for auto captions. Four 30-minute recordings through Magic Clips add about 120. Twenty caption translations add 20 to 40. Total: 165 to 185 of Starter’s 300 minutes for $6, or 30 cents a master.

## The master edit in CutLuma: one video, over a minute, clean

The master is one 1080×1920 MP4. It runs longer than one minute (TikTok’s rule [1]), fills the frame with no borders or logos (Instagram’s list [17]), and uses sound that is yours on every app.

1. **Start a 9:16 project** — Open [Resize video](https://cutluma.com/tools/resize-video), drop in your recording and pick **9:16**, or start from one of the [TikTok templates](https://cutluma.com/templates/for/tiktok). The [video sizes cheat sheet](https://cutluma.com/guides/social-media-video-sizes) has the pixel sizes for every app.
2. **Fill the frame** — Choose **Fill the frame**, not **Show everything**: bars above and below are borders to Instagram [17]. Drag the picture on the preview until the face sits in the middle.
3. **Let the camera follow the speaker** — If you filmed wide, press **Ctrl+K** and run **Auto reframe videos**. It finds the people in every clip and follows them, in your browser, with no AI time.
4. **Put the hook first, then trim** — Move your strongest sentence to the start. In the [trim tool](https://cutluma.com/tools/trim-video), press **S** to split at the playhead and **Shift+Delete** to remove a part and close the gap.
5. **Stop trimming above one minute** — Keep the timeline between 1:05 and 1:30. If you run [Remove silence](https://cutluma.com/tools/remove-silence-from-video), read the length again: cutting pauses shortens the video.
6. **Add captions** — Press **Ctrl+K**, open **Auto captions**, set **Spoken language**, pick a **Style** (Spotlight and Boxed word highlight each word) and set **Words per caption** to **Short (3)**. [Auto captions](https://cutluma.com/tools/add-captions-to-video) need a paid plan and use about one AI minute per minute of speech. On the free plan, type the lines in the [subtitle editor](https://cutluma.com/tools/subtitle-editor).
7. **Keep text inside the safe zone** — Captions land above the bottom quarter in vertical projects. Drag your own titles clear of the bottom 20%, the right edge and the top strip.
8. **Add music you may use everywhere, or none** — Open **Media → Stock library** and click a track in the music tab; the [stock library](https://cutluma.com/tools/free-stock-videos-and-music) shows public-domain and CC0 files. Turn on **Lower under speech**. A trending sound belongs to one app: add it there at upload, not in the master.
9. **Export the master** — Click **Export** and download the MP4 at 1080×1920. On a paid plan it has no CutLuma badge, and it carries no other app’s watermark because it never passed through one.

*The editor with a template open. Each line of text is its own clip on the timeline, and the **Format** buttons on the right switch the same design between 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 and 21:9.*

![The Auto captions dialog: spoken language, eight caption styles from Spotlight to Neon, words per caption, and the AI time the job will use](https://cutluma.com/img/playbooks/en/captions.webp)

*The **Auto captions** dialog. Choose the spoken language, one of eight styles and how many words show at once; the last line states the AI time before you press **Generate captions**.*

### From a long recording: Magic Clips

1. **Bring in the recording** — Open [Magic Clips](https://cutluma.com/tools/video-to-shorts) and upload a podcast, lesson or livestream of up to three hours, or paste a link to a video you own. It needs a paid plan.
2. **Ask for clips that can pass one minute** — Set **How many clips?** to 3, 5, 8, 10 or 12 and **Clip length** to **55–90 s**. The shorter ranges suit Reels, Shorts and Snapchat but not TikTok’s programme.
3. **Check each clip** — Open a scored clip. If it runs 55 to 59 seconds, extend the cut past 1:00. Fix any caption word, then **Export**.

![The Magic Clips options: the part of the video to use, how many clips, clip length, spoken language, edit style (Viral, Podcast, Clean), caption style, format, layout, pace, look and the list of edits](https://cutluma.com/img/playbooks/en/magic-clips-options.webp)

*The **Magic Clips** options before the run. Only the part you select is listened to, so that is the part you pay AI time for. The edit style, caption style, format (9:16, 4:5, 1:1) and layout (Fill, Split screen, Fit + blur) are set here.*

A 45-minute recording costs about 45 of Starter’s 300 AI minutes. To clip for other people, see [how to start a clipping business](https://cutluma.com/guides/how-to-start-a-clipping-business).

### Feed sizes, only if you need them

For a 4:5 or 1:1 feed post, press **Ctrl+K** and choose **Copy into other sizes**. In the **Magic Resize** dialog, tick the sizes and click **Create copies**. Each copy is a new project, so mind the three-project limit on the free plan.

![The Magic Resize dialog, copy into other sizes: tick boxes for 16:9, 1:1, 4:5, 21:9 and banner sizes, and a Create copies button](https://cutluma.com/img/playbooks/en/resize-copies.webp)

***Magic Resize**. Tick the sizes you need and press **Create copies**: each becomes a new project with the design rearranged to fit, and the original stays as it is.*

## Cross-posting: the upload checks for each app

| App | Length that can earn | Sound | Check before you post |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| TikTok | Over 1 minute [1] | Your voice or a sound added in the app; businesses must use the Commercial Music Library [8] | 1080p or higher; not a Duet, Stitch or Photo Mode post |
| YouTube Shorts | Up to 3 minutes; over 1 minute with claimed content is blocked [11] | Partner music sends part of the pool to licensing; your 45% applies the same way [11] | Your own footage, not a reupload |
| Instagram Reels | No minimum stated for gifts [14] | Library music or original audio is what Instagram recommends [17] | No borders, logos or watermarks; text not covering most of the picture |
| Facebook Reels | 10 seconds or more [19] | Yours to use | Posted from your own Page or professional profile |
| Snapchat Spotlight | 30 seconds or more [23] | Yours to use | Original and advertiser-friendly |

1. **Upload the same file everywhere** — Send the MP4 to your phone or upload from each website. Do not save a video out of one app to post in another: it can come back with that app’s logo on it.
2. **Write for search on TikTok** — TikTok names search value as a factor in RPM [2]. Put the phrase people would type into the description and the first on-screen line.
3. **Use Instagram’s own route to Facebook** — Facebook excludes content crossposted by a Page you do not own, but not what you crosspost from Instagram [19].

### A second market with translated captions

TikTok’s standard reward depends on the regions your viewers come from and the language of your content [2], and six of its eight programme countries are not English-speaking. To test another language, duplicate the project, open **Text → Translate captions** and pick the language. [Translate captions](https://cutluma.com/tools/translate-captions) uses a minute or two of AI time. Read the result before publishing. See [multilingual video business](https://cutluma.com/guides/multilingual-video-business).

![The Translate video dialog: the number of captions found, seventeen target languages, and a choice between translating this video and making a copy per language](https://cutluma.com/img/playbooks/en/translate-video.webp)

***Translate video**. Pick the languages and choose **A copy per language** to keep the original project; the note at the bottom gives the AI time per language.*

## Building the audience that gets you over the threshold

The first months are about watch time: TikTok says users now spend 50% of their time on longer content, and its reward metrics are average watch time, retention at 30 to 90 seconds and completion [2].

- **One topic for 30 days.** A viewer follows when the next video is predictable. “Excel tricks for accountants” beats “tips”.
- **Hooks you can copy.** “Stop doing X. Do this instead.” “I tested X for 30 days.” “Three mistakes that cost me X.” Say it in the first two seconds and show it as a title in the top third.

## A 30-day posting plan

| Week | Make | Post | Check |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Five accounts: TikTok Personal, Instagram professional, YouTube, a Facebook Page, a Snapchat Public Profile. One template. 4 masters. | 20 uploads (4 masters × 5 apps) | Every master over 1:00, 1080×1920, no badge or logo |
| 2 | 5 masters; one long recording through Magic Clips at 55–90 s | 25 uploads | Which hook held viewers to 30 seconds |
| 3 | 5 masters, two of them remakes of your best topic; one with translated captions | 25 uploads | Followers gained per app |
| 4 | 6 masters built on the two best hooks | 30 uploads | Followers against 500, 1,000 and 10,000; 30-day views against 100,000; apply where you qualify |

## Risks, rules and mistakes

> **Watch out:** Unoriginal content loses both reach and pay. TikTok lists content copied from others, repurposed without creative edits, or carrying “someone else’s visible watermark or superimposed logo” as unoriginal and ineligible for its monetization programmes [3]. YouTube excludes reuploads of other creators’ content from Shorts revenue [11] and lists “Short videos you compiled from other social media websites” as reused content [13]. Meta says accounts that keep posting mainly unoriginal content may be made non-recommendable and demonetized [21].

- **Watermarks and borders.** Instagram shows reels with borders, logos or watermarks less often, and says adding a watermark is not a material edit [17][18]. Upload the clean master.
- **Music.** Businesses cannot use TikTok’s general music library for commercial use [8]. Instagram’s library music is generally not available for subscriber-only content [15]. A Short over one minute with claimed content is blocked [11].
- **Region.** TikTok counts only views from its eight programme countries [1].
- **Account.** TikTok’s programme accepts Personal Accounts only; five video violations in 30 days make one ineligible [1].
- **Policy changes.** Snapchat’s December 2024 posting and view tests [25] became hours of view time and Snap Star status by 2026 [23]. YouTube doubles its entry test on 1 February 2027 [26]. Never build on one app.

## FAQ

**How many followers do you need to get paid on TikTok?**

The Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, and you must be 18 and based in one of eight countries [1].

**How much does TikTok pay per 1,000 views?**

TikTok publishes no fixed rate. It defines RPM as average gross revenue per 1,000 qualified views and says it depends on viewer region, language, watch time, retention, completion and search value [2].

**Does Instagram pay for Reels views?**

Not through an open programme. Instagram’s help centre offers gifts from 500 followers at $0.01 a star, subscriptions for eligible creators and bonuses by invitation [14][15][16].

**How much does YouTube pay for Shorts?**

Monetizing creators keep 45% of the revenue allocated to their Shorts from a monthly Creator Pool [11]. That tier needs 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days today [9], and 20 million for channels that apply from 1 February 2027 [26].

**Can I post the same video on TikTok, Reels and Shorts?**

Yes, if it is your own video and you upload the original file to each app. The platforms penalize other people’s content and files that carry another app’s watermark or logo [3][17].

**How long should a short video be to earn on every platform?**

Between one and three minutes. TikTok rewards videos over one minute [1], Snapchat needs 30 seconds [23], Facebook 10 [19], and three-minute Shorts can monetize [11].
