How to remove silence from a video

Use a silence remover: it measures how loud the audio is, finds pauses longer than a set length and cuts them out, leaving jump cuts. Then play it back and restore any pause that should stay.

Step by step

  1. Open the videoDrop your clip into Remove silence. It opens in your browser; no account needed.
  2. Let it find the pausesThe audio is analysed on your device, and every stretch of near-silence of about 0.7 seconds or more is cut out, with a short breath kept around each sentence.
  3. Already editing? Use the clip’s buttonFor a clip that is already on the timeline, select it and press Cut silences under Magic tools in the right-hand panel.
  4. Review the cutsWatch it through. Each cut is a normal edit: drag a clip’s edge to bring a pause back, or press Ctrl+Z to undo the whole pass.
  5. Clean up the soundWith the clip selected, turn on Reduce background noise and Enhance voice so the cuts sound smooth and the voice is clear.
  6. ExportAdd captions, music or a title if you like, then export the MP4.

How automatic silence removal works

A silence remover listens to the audio in short slices and measures how loud each one is. It works out the level of the background noise, treats anything close to that level as silence, and removes silent stretches longer than a minimum length. A little padding is left on each side so words aren’t clipped.

In CutLuma the analysis runs in your browser, so your video isn’t uploaded to find the silences. It cuts pauses of about 0.7 seconds or more that are near the background level, keeps a short breath around each sentence, and closes the gaps on the timeline. Clips recorded together, like a screen and a camera bubble, are cut together so they stay in sync.

When to remove silence — and when not to

Silence removal is made for videos where the words carry the content: tutorials, talking-head videos, lessons, podcasts, product demos and screen recordings. The result is tighter and easier to follow, and it saves a lot of manual trimming. It’s a staple for teachers and podcasters.

Leave it off, or review it closely, when pauses are part of the meaning: comic timing, an emotional interview, a dramatic reveal, or a scene where the background sound matters. Never run it on a music video.

Getting clean results

  • Record close to the microphone in a quiet room. The clearer the gap between your voice and the room, the more accurate the cuts.
  • Keep music on its own track. Music on a separate track doesn’t affect the analysis, but music recorded into the same clip fills every pause, so there is no silence to find.
  • Watch for noise bursts. A steady hum is mostly handled because the threshold follows the background level, but a door slam or a dog bark counts as sound and stays in.
  • Hide the jump cuts. Cover some cuts with B-roll or a screenshot, or scale alternate segments slightly (say 100% and 110%) so each cut looks deliberate.
  • Read it back with captions on. Cut words show up quickly in the captions, so you can spot and fix them.

Silence removal in the screen recorder

If you record with the screen recorder, you don’t need a separate step: Remove silences is switched on by default and runs as soon as you press Stop, together with auto-zoom. That means you can pause to think or check your notes while recording. See how to record your screen with your webcam for the full workflow.

Finishing by hand

Automatic removal gets you most of the way. For the last few “ums” and false starts, move the playhead to the start of the mistake, press S to split, do the same at the end, then select the piece and press Shift+Delete to remove it and close the gap. The arrow keys step one frame at a time for precise cuts.

FAQ

Is it free?

Yes. Silence removal runs on your own device, so it is part of the free editor and works without an account. Free exports include a small watermark.

Can I make it more or less aggressive?

The pause length is fixed at about 0.7 seconds. To keep a particular pause, drag the clip’s edge back after the pass; to tighten further, split and delete by hand.

Does it work for long videos?

Yes, for files your browser can open — typically up to an hour or two of footage.

Is my video uploaded to find the silences?

No. The audio is analysed on your device. Without an account, your files stay in your browser while you edit.
