CutLuma vs Descript
Both edit video by editing words. Descript is a desktop app built around the transcript; CutLuma runs in the browser and adds a full design canvas, 660+ templates, a studio screen recorder and industry kits on top of the same text-based workflow.
CutLuma and Descript in two paragraphs
Descript's big idea is that a video is a document: delete a sentence and the footage goes with it. CutLuma has the same Transcript tab — select words, press Delete, and the cut ripples across every track — with one-click clean-ups for filler words, long pauses and repeated takes, in English, Arabic and Spanish.
Where the two differ is everything around the transcript. Descript is a recording and podcast suite with strong audio tools (Studio Sound, Eye Contact, AI avatars). CutLuma is a Canva-style editor: text effects, charts, device mockups, QR codes, brand kits, templates in English, Arabic and Spanish, and industry kits for real estate, construction and clinics — and it exports in your browser, so there is no render queue and no media-hours meter.

What CutLuma adds
Same text-based editing, no media meter
Descript counts "media hours" on every plan. CutLuma counts only AI time, and only for AI features; uploading and editing hours of footage costs nothing.
Design, not just cuts
Text effects, charts, mockups, QR codes, frames, brand kits and 660+ templates — the parts of a video Descript expects you to make elsewhere.
Arabic and Spanish are first-class
Right-to-left captions and transcripts, Arabic fonts and templates, a Spanish template pack and Spanish AI voices.
Where Descript is still ahead. Descript still wins on a few things: Eye Contact, AI avatars, Studio Sound-grade audio repair, dubbing into 30+ languages, and remote recording Rooms. If those are your daily tools, Descript is the better fit.
Questions? Answers.
Is CutLuma a Descript alternative?
For transcript-based editing, filler-word removal, captions, publish text and an AI co-editor, yes. For AI avatars, eye-contact correction and multi-guest remote recording, Descript still has features CutLuma does not.
Can I move a Descript project to CutLuma?
Export the finished video (MP4) from Descript and drop it into CutLuma; it is transcribed again in seconds. Timelines do not transfer directly.
Does CutLuma need a download?
No. It runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Firefox, and exports render on your own computer.
