A Runway alternative with a full editor around the AI

Runway is a leading AI video lab with its own frontier models. CutLuma comes at it from the editing side: generate shots with Seedance, Kling, Veo or Wan, see the price in dollars before each run, and finish the video on a real timeline with captions, voiceover and templates.

Overview

CutLuma vs Runway

In short. Switch if you mostly need a few generated shots inside a finished video, want to see what each run costs in dollars rather than credits, or would rather bring your own fal.ai key and pay the model provider directly. Stay with Runway if you need its in-house models — Gen-4.5, Aleph editing, Act-Two performance capture — relighting, the Premiere Pro and After Effects plugins, mobile apps or an enterprise contract.

Runway makes its own video models, Gen-4.5 among them, and builds tools around them: Aleph for editing existing video with prompts, Act-Two for driving a character with your own performance, an agent, and apps such as Remove from Video, Upscale and Relight. It also resells third-party models (Seedance, Kling, Nano Banana, FLUX, Eleven v3), has Premiere Pro and After Effects plugins, MCP access and iOS and Android apps. Pricing is in credits. As of October 2026 its site lists a Free plan with 125 one-time credits, Standard at $15 a month ($12 billed yearly) with 625 credits, Pro at $35 with 2,250 and Max at $95 with 9,500. Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second, so Standard covers about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month; monthly credits do not roll over on Standard and Pro, and top-ups start at 1,000 credits. Plans change, so check their site.

CutLuma is a browser video editor that added generation to the timeline. The AI video panel makes text-to-video and image-to-video shots with ByteDance Seedance 2.5, Kling 3 Turbo, Google Veo 3.1 Lite (with sound) and Alibaba Wan 3.0, AI images with Nano Banana 2, prompt edits with Kling O3 and Wan 2.7, clip extension with Veo 3.1 Fast, upscaling to 1080p, 2K or 4K, and object removal. A shot can go straight into a gap on the timeline, cut to the gap's length and the project's shape. Around it sit the multi-track timeline, captions in 17 languages, AI voiceover, 660+ templates, a screen recorder, brand kit and export up to 4K.

Prices are shown in dollars before every run: the model provider's price plus a small service fee. Paid plans include a monthly generation credit, top-up packs never expire, and on Pro and Business you can add your own fal.ai API key and pay fal directly with no CutLuma markup. Before you spend, the panel suggests cheaper paths — a still picture with a camera move, a stock clip or a template. What you give up: Runway's own models and research, Act-Two, Relight, its plugins and phone apps. AI generation is not part of CutLuma's free plan; the free plan covers editing and 1080p exports with a small watermark.

Why switch

What you gain with CutLuma

Generation inside a real editor

Generated shots land on a multi-track timeline next to your footage, with captions in 17 languages, AI voiceover, 660+ templates, a brand kit and export up to 4K.

Dollars, not credits

Every run shows its price in dollars before you press Generate, at the provider's price plus a small fee. Top-up packs never expire.

Bring your own fal.ai key

On Pro and Business, connect your own fal.ai key and pay fal directly for generation, with no CutLuma markup.

Cheaper paths suggested first

A still picture with a camera move, a stock clip or a template often does the job; the panel offers them before you spend on a video model.

Fair is fair

Where Runway is still the better pick

You need frontier in-house models

Gen-4.5, Aleph video editing and Act-Two performance capture are Runway's own, and Relight and its research-led tools have no CutLuma equivalent.

You work in Premiere, After Effects or on a phone

Runway has Premiere Pro and After Effects plugins, iOS and Android apps and enterprise plans. CutLuma runs in a desktop browser only.

FAQ

Questions? Answers.

Is CutLuma a free Runway alternative?

For editing, yes: the editor, templates and recorder are free, with 1080p exports that carry a small watermark. AI video generation is not free on any plan, because the models cost money to run; paid plans include a monthly generation credit.

Which is cheaper for AI video?

It depends on the model and how much you make. CutLuma shows each run in dollars at the provider's price plus a small fee, and on Pro and Business you can use your own fal.ai key with no markup. Compare a typical month of your shots on both before you decide.

Does CutLuma have Gen-4.5 or Aleph?

No. Those are Runway's own models. CutLuma uses third-party models through fal.ai: Seedance, Kling, Veo and Wan for video and Nano Banana for images.

Can I bring Runway clips into CutLuma?

Yes. Download the clips from Runway and drop them on the CutLuma timeline like any other video.
