A free Camtasia alternative for tutorials and demos, online
Camtasia is TechSmith's desktop screen recorder and editor, the long-time standard for software tutorials. CutLuma does the record-then-edit workflow in a browser tab: auto-zoom, silence removal, timeline, captions, callouts and titles, free to start.
CutLuma vs Camtasia
In short. Switch if you make tutorials and demos and want a free start, nothing installed, auto-zoom that follows your clicks, captions in 17 languages and share links. Stay with Camtasia if you need its desktop power: cursor effects and precise zoom-and-pan keyframing, interactive quizzes, SCORM output for learning systems, offline editing of long courses and a one-time licence your organisation already owns.
Camtasia is TechSmith's screen recording and video editing suite for Windows and macOS, used for software tutorials, training and course videos for two decades. It records screen, webcam and system audio, then edits with callouts, cursor effects, zoom-and-pan, annotations, quizzes and captions, and exports to video or learning-system formats. It is sold as a licence or subscription with a free trial that watermarks exports — as of 2026, check their site for current pricing.
CutLuma covers the tutorial workflow in the browser. The studio recorder captures screen, camera bubble and mic with auto-zoom on your clicks, silence removal and a frame; the Chrome extension records any tab. The result opens on a multi-track timeline with trim and split, titles in 134 fonts, text effects, shapes, callout-style stickers, keyframes, transitions, freeze frames, speed changes, AI captions in 17 languages, transcript editing and a publish kit. Templates, device mockups and QR codes give tutorials a produced look. Exports render on your computer up to 4K; a free account needs no credit card.
What you give up: Camtasia's cursor effects, manual zoom-and-pan keyframing with easing, interactive quizzes and hotspots, SCORM and LMS output, a large library of assets, and the comfort of a native app for hour-long courses edited offline. CutLuma needs a desktop browser and an internet connection, puts its AI features in paid plans with a monthly AI-time allowance, and watermarks free 1080p exports.

What you gain with CutLuma
Free to start, nothing to install
A free account in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or Linux. No licence key, no installer, no updates to manage.
Auto-zoom and silence removal while you record
The studio recorder zooms in on your clicks and cuts the dead air for you, so a first-take demo looks edited before you open the timeline.
Captions and transcript editing
AI captions in 17 languages you can correct line by line, and a transcript tab where deleting a sentence removes the footage.
Share a link, not a 2 GB file
Publish to a branded player with chapters, comments and view counts, or export MP4 and send the cut to Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve on a paid plan.
Where Camtasia is still the better pick
You build e-learning
Quizzes, hotspots, SCORM and LMS packaging are Camtasia features CutLuma does not have.
You need desktop-grade control
Cursor effects, hand-keyframed zoom-and-pan with easing, system-audio capture on every OS and offline editing of long courses are stronger in a native app.

Questions? Answers.
Is CutLuma a free Camtasia alternative?
Yes for recording, editing and sharing tutorials: the recorder, editor and templates are free, and 1080p exports carry a small watermark. Paid plans remove the watermark, add 60 fps and 4K, and include AI captions and transcript editing.
Can I import a Camtasia project?
No. Export the finished MP4 from Camtasia and import it into CutLuma. Project files are not compatible.
Does CutLuma zoom in on clicks like Camtasia?
Yes, automatically. The studio recorder detects clicks and zooms in on them while you record. Hand-keyframed zoom-and-pan with custom easing is a Camtasia strength CutLuma does not match.
Can I make quizzes or SCORM courses?
No. CutLuma produces video and share links, not interactive courses or LMS packages.
